Mattisse II
"Landscape with Brook" by Henri Mattisse, 1907
Master Study
About
Another Matisse master study, this time of “Landscape with Brook,” 1907. Referencing Matisse, who was one of the founders of Fauvism—a colorful style of depicting somewhat abstracted subjects—makes for an even more colorful, more abstracted piece. The lone tree in the background helps to ground the abstracted landscape in a bit of reality. Otherwise, the artist was able to focus on how Matisse’s simple brush strokes indicate complicated forms of plants, water, and rocks. The artist emphasizes the beautiful simplicity of those strokes as forms in their own right, such as how the cluster of rocks in the center right of the original become vivid red circles in Roon’s study.
