Anyone who’s been to Moab national park knows that these rocks are a work of art by nature. For this reason, Roon was inspired to paint them in this piece. It was clearly an excercise in depth and shadows. The openings of these cave-like structures are in deep dark shadow, but every bit of light within is given its own shade of gray. This gives the rock a posterized effect rather than a smoothly blended gradient.
