Indian Flag

About

Painting of the Indian national flag, representing the artist’s ties to India through his Indian immigrant parents. The stripes, saffron, white, and green, are painted in his dots-and-dashes style. His strokes mimic the woven texture of the special fabric used to make the Indian flag. In the original flag, the wheel in the center is dark blue and has 24 spokes. Its presence in the flag reference’s India’s history with the Buddhist faith. In the artist’s interpretation, however, the wheel resembles a wooden wagon wheel. By transforming the wheel into a literal wheel, viewers are to consider how unity and enlightenment can physically move us into the future.
